Chan, Michael

Michael James Chan passed away peacefully at home after a brief illness. Mike was born in Singapore in 1965 and moved to a suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota with his family in 1977. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, Mike worked for IBM for 38 years in New York and Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. His family moved to Delaware in 2018 for his wife’s job as a faculty member at the University of Delaware.

Wherever he lived, Mike followed Minnesota college and professional sports and passed that love onto his son, a tough legacy at times when you live near Philadelphia. Mike loved watching his kids compete in swimming, having family meals, and curating a photo history of our family adventures near and far.

Mike is survived by his wife, Jennifer Horney; his children, Ian and Lila Chan; his parents, Yee Yan and Amy Chan of Nokomis Florida; his sisters, Michelle Granholm (Mark) of Dallas, Texas and Madeline Chan (Gary Yatcyshyn) of Portland, Oregon; and nieces and nephews, Andrew, Kimberly, Lucas, and Trevor.

Mike loved traveling with his family and channeled that into giving others the opportunity to have that experience by establishing an endowment to provide financial support for students to attend study aboard programs. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Jennifer Horney & Michael Chan Endowment at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. To donate, please follow this link and select this endowment in the dropdown menu. To contribute via USPS, please send to NCSSM Foundation, 1219 Broad Street Durham, NC 27705 and in the memo write: Fund #871, Jennifer Horney & Michael Chan Endowment.

Information about a celebration of life will be available at a later time.
