Collins, Margaret T. (“Midge”)

Margaret T. Collins, (“Midge”) age 98, passed peacefully on March 26, 2024. Midge was born in South Philadelphia to Irish immigrants, John and Margaret Hopkins. She was the fourth of seven children. She had very fond memories of her siblings and their adventures growing up on Croskey Street.

Midge graduated from John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in June 1944, and the following week she went to work at the Philadelphia Quartermaster. She later worked at the Atlantic Refining Company where she met her husband, Jim, an engineer.

Midge and Jim were married in 1949, after which they built their own home in Claymont. She and her husband owned and operated Collins Supply Company, a building supply company in South Wilmington since 1965. Midge continued to provide accounting and payroll services to the business until she was 96 years old.

Midge was predeceased by her husband of 67 years James T. Collins, and sons James P. and David. She is survived by sons, Joseph of Claymont, Paul and his wife Audrey of New Canaan, Connecticut, John of Wilmington, daughter Margaret and her husband, Don Coffin of Berlin, Maryland, and daughter-in-law, Gail Collins of Wilmington. She had four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

She was the sister of the late John Hopkins, Mary O’Halloran, Anna Callinan, James Hopkins, Ellen Sulzbach and Nora McLaughlin. Sister-in-law of the late June Love and Paul Collins.

Midge was selflessly devoted to her family, and always maintained a sense of humor and positive outlook.

A visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday, April 3 at 10:00 AM at McCrery and Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, with a Catholic funeral service at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at All Saints Cemetery.
