Mackie, James Alfred, Sr, “Al” / “Buck”

James Alfred Mackie, Sr, “Al” / “Buck”, age 79, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on March 8, 2024.

He was born in West Grove, PA and raised in Kemblesville, PA on the family farm and was the son of the late Mildred (George) and Joseph W. Mackie, Sr. Al graduated from Avon Grove High School in 1964.

In his younger years, Al not only worked on the family farm but worked at Jone’s Dairy Farm in Avondale. He then worked for both the dairy farm and Silverbrook Cemetery until the dairy farm closed in 1979. Al continued to work on the grounds crew at Silverbrook until 2011.

He was a member of the Pushmobile Derby Committee and volunteered for years at the DAP Pushmobile Derby and volunteered for the JayCee Christmas parade. Al enjoyed not only working in his yard and working around the house but helping other with their home projects. He also enjoyed attending Wilmington High sporting events even after his children graduated, along with going to the Blue Rocks, where he worked at the concession stands and Phillies games.First but foremost, the time he spent with his family brought him his most joy.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy R. Mackie; 2 children, Jennifer Thomas and her husband David and James A. Mackie, Jr. and his wife Tammy; 3 granddaughters, Mackenzie and Macie Thomas and Faith Mackie; a brother, Joseph W. Mackie, Jr.; his brother-in-law, Robert Withers and many nieces and nephews. Al is also preceded in death by his 2 sisters and their husbands, Evelyn Nilan (James) and Nancy Nilan (David)

A viewing will be held on Thursday, March 14 from 6-8 pm at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington. A funeral service will be held the next day, Friday, March 15 at 11 am at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.
