Gibbs, Dorothy

On March 5, 2024 Dorothy Agnes Miles Gibbs, age 91, joined her husband and many friends who also predeceased her. She is survived by her son, Tim and his family, Eric and Troy, who cared for her until her departure along with many other friends including Kate Smith who she considered a granddaughter. Her friends Bill Taber, Sue Gundel, and Paul Griffin, Jr. were a constant source of support at the bedside to the very end.

The outstanding caregiver team from Delaware Hospice (Erica and Kelsey of particular note), were just fantastic with her and the rest of the family.

Dorothy was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada and met her husband, Hugh Harper Gibbs, who was born in Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada. Not long after they met, Hugh was recruited by the Dupont Company and they moved to the United States, ultimately settling in Wilmington, Delaware.Hugh and Dorothy become naturalized American citizens in 1965, seven years after the birth of their son, Timothy Edward Richard Miles Gibbs.

Dorothy was also known as Dot, Mrs. Gibbs, Aunt Dorothy, Dr. Dorothy, Mom, Grandmom, and many other appellations. Fiercely protective of those she loved, she was a force of nature. She was also an extraordinary cook, accomplished seamstress, book keeper, and never met a craft that involved needles and thread which she didn’t master. Dorothy also refinished furniture, and late in life found the joys of gardening.

Besides her son and his family, she is survived by relatives in Canada and the United Kingdom, and by friends near and far who will see her again, all in good time.

At her request, there will be no service or other gathering.Instead, she asked that you hug your spouse, your children, your neighbor, your friends, and hum a verse or two of Amazing Grace. Please, in lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to the Delaware Academy of Medicine (https://delamed.org), Delaware Hospice (https://www.delawarehospice.org/) or Neighbors for Nicaragua (https://neighborstonicaragua.com).
