Harry Stanley (Stan) Hughes, Jr. of West Chester, PA, died on March 3, 2024. He was 93. Mr. Hughes was born in 1930 in Buffalo, NY, the only child of the late Harry Stanley and Marian Fletcher Hughes. He moved to Delaware when he was 6 years old and spent most of his life there, attending Mount Pleasant Elementary School, P.S. duPont High School and the University of Delaware. In 1947 he was Delaware’s representative to the World Boy Scout Jamboree in France. At the U of D he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity and the Leadership Honor Society, Omicron Delta Kappa. He participated in the track and cross country teams and was the Delaware State Champion in the Half Mile event. It was there he met his future wife, Jeanne Cashman Hughes. He graduated in the U of D Class of 1952 and he and Jeanne were married shortly after they graduated. He served in Air Defense Units in the Army during the Korean War and continued his service as an officer education instructor in the Army Reserve, retiring as a colonel in 1984.
Mr. Hughes spent the majority of his working career with Smith Kline & French Laboratories in Philadelphia where he held a variety of managerial positions in systems development, marketing and manufacturing both in the US and in Puerto Rico. After retiring from SK&F in 1986, he and his wife founded HCS LTD, a consulting company that provided business services for mental health therapists. In conjunction with this business, he served as Executive Director of the Delaware Psychological Association from 1990 through 2002. He and his wife closed their company in 2003 when they moved to Coniston, a Kendal-Crosslands Independent Living Community in West Chester.
Mr. Hughes was a member of the Military Order of the World Wars, the USO, the Association of the U.S. Army, the American Legion, and many other organizations. He was inducted into University of Delaware Hall of Heros in 1996 in recognition of his military service. He attended classes at the U of D’s OSHER Institute for a number of years and he and his wife also traveled extensively, visiting all seven continents. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Jeanne Cashman Hughes, a daughter, Diane Jeanne McKenna (Richard) of Conneaut, OH; a son, David Fletcher Hughes (Theresa) of Ocean Gate, NJ ; four grandchildren, Justin V. Hughes (Christina); Jessica J. Hernandez (Richard); J. Peter Lambrou II (Hannah Lewis); Alexis D. Lambrou, two great granddaughters and two great grandsons.
A memorial service will be held at McCrery Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington DE 19803 at 11 o’clock on Thursday March 7, 2024 followed by a luncheon for friends and family. Interment in the Delaware Veterans Cemetery with military honors will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Tree Tops Kitty Café, 302 W.
