Taylor, Catherine L.

Newark - Catherine L. Taylor, of Newark, passed away at home on February 16, 2024, with her sons by her side. She was 92.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa, to the late John Liddy and Elizabeth Detwiler, Cathy was a 1949 graduate of Ridley Park High School. She was the wife of the late George R. Taylor, for 60 years. The couple married in August 1963, and together they raised 3 boys.

Known as a doting wife, mother, and grandmother, Cathy was a true partner to her devoted husband. When not tending to the home, she could be found baking cakes from scratch; attending her sons’, husband’s, and grandchildren’s sporting events; fishing on Great Pond in Maine every August; faithfully sending cards to loved ones and shut-ins; participating as an active member of Newark Evangelical Presbyterian Church, including women’s Bible studies; and always keeping busy helping others. She was an excellent accountant who kept meticulous records and enjoyed her early career as a secretary for DuPont, in retail with Braunstein’s and Avon, and later with Bank of Delaware, Fairfield branch. Cathy then took up flower arranging at a nearby Kirk’s Florist, and often made small arrangements for friends and loved ones to enjoy. She delighted in card games with friends, dominoes with her children, and Connect-4 and Uno with her grandkids. She enjoyed instrumental music, big band music, and Longwood Gardens. She was a lifelong Phillies and Eagles fan. In her community, she had her own fans: for 35 years she was well-known for giving out her homemade candy apples, every Halloween; during that time the neighborhood kids affectionately dubbed her home ‘the candy apple house’.

In addition to her parents, Cathy was preceded in death by her first husband, Gene J. Janick (1956).She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law: Gene (Melodie)of Westminster, MD; Robert (Debbie) of Newark, DE; and Neil (Ann Marie) of Wilmington, DE, as well as six grandchildren: Steven (Sydney), Zack, Ashley (Chris), Kyra (Tom), Kai, and Ty. Cathy is also survived by her beloved dog Cocoa, along with many dear friends and relatives.

A memorial service to celebrate Cathy’s life will be held on Friday, March 1st at Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Newark, 308 Possum Park Road, Newark DE. Visitation will be held from 10:00AM to 11:00AM. Memorial Service will begin at 11:00AM. Burial will be held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery privately at a later date.
