David F. Godwin, “Snapper”age 86, of Bear, DE, passed away on Friday, February 9, 2024 with his family by his side.

Born in New Castle, DE on November 19, 1937, he was the son of the late Edward and Mildred (Truitt) Godwin. David attended New Castle schools and graduated from William Penn High School in the class of 1956. He married his high school sweetheart Joyce M. Ainsworth on September 14, 1957.

David and Joyce owned and operated David F. Godwin Inc., a trucking company in New Castle which they established in 1972. He retired in 1998. David will be remembered for being a wonderful husband, dad, grandfather, and a friend to many. In his younger days he enjoyed roller-skating, boating, and going on cruises and traveling throughout many states. Following his retirement he loved wintering in Nokomis, FL where he made many lasting friendships.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Joyce M. Godwin, and brother James E. Godwin (Helen) of Oak Orchard, DE. He is survived by his brother Gregg B. Godwin (Norma) of FL, sister-in-law Joanne Driscoll (Tom) of GA, sons David M. Godwin (Johnna) of Townsend, DE, and Dale B. Godwin (Sharon) of Middletown, DE. In addition to his sons, he is survived by 3 grandchildren, Matthew R. Godwin (Amanda), Meghan G. Shellem (Darren), Lauren Godwin, and 5 great-grandchildren. and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 am -11:00 am on Friday, February 16, 2024 at McCrery and Harra Funeral Homes, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, where a funeral service will begin at 11:00 am. A committal service will be held immediately following at Silverbrook Cemetery, 3300 Lancaster Pike, Wilmington, DE. A celebration of life luncheon will follow at Deerfield Golf and Country Club, 507 Thompson Station Rd, Newark, DE at 1:15 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in David’s name to Delaware Hospice.
