Laird, John P. "Jack"

John P. “Jack” Laird, age 92, of Wilmington, DE, formerly of Chester, PA, died at home on February 8, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.

Jack attended Chester High, graduating in 1949. He served in the army during the Korean War with the Army Corps of Engineers. After being discharged, Jack worked as the director of admission and registration at Riddle Memorial Hospital, however his passion was music. Jack was a professional drummer and member of the Musicians Union. In his spare time Jack enjoyed watching the Phillies and volunteering for the Disabled American Veterans organization.

Jack had a deep, abiding faith and was a longtime member of Saint Mary Magdalen Church, and set an example for his children as a gentleman and kind soul despite his sometimes “spicy” demeanor.

Jack was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Joanne J. Laird, in 2023; sister Mary Priori; and brother J. Edward Laird. He is survived by his children Mary Gipe (James), Fran Wagner (Dan), Paula Hughes (Todd), Kathie Fierro (Joe), Jackie Fogelman (Brian), and Brian Laird; 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and sister Bonnie Myers.

Viewing will be Friday, February 16 from 9 - 10:15 a.m. at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803. A eulogy will be offered at 10:50 a.m. at Saint Mary Magdalen Church, 7 Sharpley Rd., Wilmington, DE 19803 with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment with military honors to follow at Lawncroft Cemetery.
