McGinley, John P.

John Patrick McGinley, 86, of Wilmington, Delaware passed away at home after a short illness on January 15, 2024.

John was born to Helen and John McGinley on September 6, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. John was a gifted swimmer who was the Captain of his Saint Joseph’s Preparatory High School team as well as the West Chester University swim team. After graduating with a degree in Education, John began his career as a teacher in the Claymont School district in 1961. After 10 years, John began a career in Educational sales for 21 years. John returned to teaching in 1992 and retired from the Brandywine School District in 2003. John also dedicated numerous years to youth swimming in New Castle County.

While his career was important, John’s true love and passion was his family. John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Suzanne; His daughters, Patty Ratkevic; Carolyn Krohn (David); Suzanne Sawyer (Don); and Maureen Romeo. John is also survived by his siblings; Helen McCall, Sister Patricia McGinley, Charlie McGinley and Betsy Maloney. John was predeceased by his son-in-law Stephen Romeo.

The light of John’s life was his grandchildren. You could always find “Pop-Pop” in the stands, on the sidelines or in the crowd cheering them on. John Ratkevic (Emily), J.P. Sawyer, Hannah Krohn, Grace Sawyer, Katie Krohn, Lindsay Sawyer, Stephen Romeo and Tori Romeo were his pride and joy.

John’s family will host a celebration of his life on Saturday January 20, 2024 at The Church of The Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Rd., Wilmington, Delaware. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with memorial Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be private.
