Walls, Gladys

Gladys Winfield Walls, age 97, passed away on December 29, 2023 at Little Flower Manor in Darby, PA. She was married to Robert Leon Walls from 1955 until his death in 1988.

Born in Coatesville, PA in 1926, she was the daughter of Lonnie Winfield and Anna Brown Winfield, and the sister of Earl Winfield, Roy Winfield and Ted Jackson. She graduated from Coatesville High School and later graduated with MA degrees from Lincoln University and Temple University. One of her proudest accomplishments was being the second woman to graduate from Lincoln University in 1955, and her best friends through life were those that she met there: Grace Frankowsky, Jim Frankowsky and Emery Wimbish.

After graduating from Lincoln, she started a successful career in education, first working as a teacher at Masterman, and then working as an English teacher at Overbrook High School in Philadelphia. She ended her career by working as an adjunct instructor at Community College of Philadelphia.

She will be remembered for her passions for teaching, exercising and travel, and for having a great sense of humor and adventure. Her favorite places to be, after retirement, were the Haverford YMCA, the Wynnewood JCC and Bethany Beach in Delaware.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa, and son-in-law John, a large number of nieces, nephews and cousins, and a bevy of beloved students. The family would especially like to thank David Euwings and Crystal Johnson for their devotion to her and their many visits at the end of her life.
