Cheung Leung, Pui King

Yip Yau Cheung (also known as Pui King Leung), 94, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away on December 14, 2023 of natural causes at her home. Yip Yau was born on September 1, 1929 in Hoiping, China to father Cheung Bing Yim. Yip Yau moved to Hong Kong with her eldest daughter to join her husband in 1957. In spite of all of the adversities and hardship she faced, she was able to raise her four children and support her family financially through her craftsmanship and work ethic.

Yip Yau loved to love people. Whether it was her infamous joong or banquet-style dishes, Yip Yau always looked forward to cooking for everyone, whether you were family or someone she had just met. She dedicated her life to helping people in need, even when she had limited resources. Her family always said that she should have been a historian, politician, or backroom negotiator, given that she was a captivating storyteller and persuasive orator. Even though Yip Yau never received a formal education, she was able to mediate several difficult situations and advise others in a way that shifted their lives for the better. She will be remembered for her heart of gold, leadership, intelligence, and tenacity.

Yip Yau is survived by her husband Kwong Yeu Leung, daughters Brenda Chen (Hwu Chen) and Polly Kam (Allan Kam), son Ringo Leung (Lisa Leung), granddaughters Erica Gibbard (Jeff Gibbard) and Monica Gassenberger (Steven Gassenberger), grandsons Jonathan Kam, Julian Kam, Brandon Leung, and Tristan Leung, and three great-grandchildren.

Yip Yau was preceded in death by her father, foster mother Mei Cum Ng, and son Edward Leung (Windy Hom).
