Winsor, Lucy A.

Lucy A. Winsor, 91, of Wilmington, DE, died peacefully with family nearby on December 7, 2023. She was born on January 21, 1932 to Frank and Margaret Sanborn, Medford, MA.
A graduate of Girls Catholic High School, Malden, MA, Lucy worked for H Harris & Co Auctioneers in Boston and for North Jersey Trends. From a young age, she also worked at her father’s ice cream shoppe, managing the books, helping with deliveries, and working the ice cream fountains.

Lucy was a trained singer, and during high school she sang with The Hi-Liters band as Bob Winsor played trumpet. True love bloomed and in 1953, 7 years after their first date, they wed. As a Navy wife, Lucy lived in a number of different locations, and she often said that as soon as they would fix one place up, they’d have to move to another! They finally moved to their “starter home” in Wilmington Delaware in 1965 - and there they stayed.

During their 63 years of marriage, Lucy managed the busy household of 4 children, a husband, and a beagle with love and care. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Music was a big part of Lucy’s life, and you could always hear her beautiful voice as she sang around the house. She was active in choir at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, with the Interpreters (ana Capella ensemble), and a Life Member/founding member of the Brandywiners Chorale.

After Bob’s early retirement, trips to Chincoteague VA happened frequently, and Lucy reveled in their loving relationship and the peaceful life they shared. Bob predeceased Lucy in March 2017, and she never stopped missing him. Lucy also was predeceased by her grandson John Winsor of Austin, TX, in March 2016. Lucy is survived by her four children: Mark Winsor (Anne), Robert Winsor (Angela), Lucy Knappenberger (Robert) and Elizabeth Stewart; her grandchildren: Mary Quarles (Blake), Gwen Bennett (Travis), Tyler Winsor, Laura Teoli (Mark), Emily Zaleski (Andrew) and Rachel Corey (Stephen); her great grandchildren: Kendall Stewart, Avery Corey, Mia and Annabelle Bennett, Bailey and John Winsor (Win) Quarles, Owen Zaleski, and her newest great grandchild due in 2024.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday December 14 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4701 Weldin Rd., Wilmington, DE 19803. Visitation will be from 12-1pm followed by Mass at 1pm. Burial immediately following at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery, Greenville, DE. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church at the above address or the Emmanuel Dining Room, 121 N. Jackson St. Wilmington.
