Shepherd, Charles "Chip", III

Charles “Chip” Aloysius Shepherd III, 54, of New Castle, DE passed away Sunday, November 26, 2023, unexpectedly at home. Charles was born on January 9, 1969. He was an alumnus of Salesianum School where he was a member of the basketball and baseball teams and a graduate from the University of Delaware.

Master Corporal Shepherd started his career with the New Castle County Police Department in December of 1993. He graduated the Police Academy in June of 1994 as a member of the 21st recruit class. The majority of his career was spent on A Squad as a Field Training Officer. Master Corporal Shepherd played a crucial role in shaping the next generation of law enforcement with his positive influence and strong foundation was immeasurable. Master Corporal Shepherd received numerous complimentary letters from the citizens of New Castle County. He was awarded a Letter of Commendation in 2009 and was awarded a Life Saving Award in 2018. He was assigned to the Special Operations Unit (before MET when it was called the Community Crime Intervention Team) 2007-2010. He was also a member of the Tactical Response Team with the New Castle County Police Department. After 26 yrs. of service, Chip retired in August of 2019.

In his earlier years, Chip played football for St. Thomas’s CYO League coached by his father. In addition, he also played baseball for Post 1 American Legion and C Wallace Semi-pro. He enjoyed playing golf with family members and many friends and spending time at the beach.

In his retirement, Chip enjoyed spending most of his time with his wife and family at their beach home in Long Neck, DE where he loved being out on the boat fishing. If he wasn’t fishing, he enjoyed being at home watching Notre Dame Football, reading or doing crossword puzzles, and spending late night hour playing cards. You could also find Chip down at Massey’s Boat Ramp watching all the entertainment with ice-cream from Nana & Pop’s.

Chip is survived by his loving wife, Christine Shepherd; mother, Ruth Ann Shepherd; brother, Michael Shepherd (Deanna); mother and father in-law, Paul and Margaret Caldwell III; brother-in-law, Paul Caldwell IV (Maggie); niece and nephew, Maddison and Zachary Caldwell; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Shepherd Jr.; paternal grandparents; Charles and Alice Shepherd Sr. and Arnold and Margaret Glanden.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, December 6 from 4:00 p.m-8:00 p.m. at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808. Services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, December 7 at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at Gracelawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S).
