Scarborough, Ellen Stevenson

Ellen Stevenson Scarborough of Greenville, DE passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on November 22, 2023. Ellen was born in Greensboro, MD to John F and Edith (Dill) Stevenson on September 27, 1927.

Ellen was a graduate of Greensboro High School and a graduate in the first Medical Secretary Class at Goldey College in Wilmington in 1947. She was a medical secretary for a local doctor for several years.

Growing up, Ellen and her family lived on a farm outside of Greensboro, MD. She loved the outdoors, animals, and spending time with her family, friends, and extended relatives. Ellen was very active and enjoyed playing sports, especially basketball in high school.

Ellen married Gilbert S. Scarborough Jr. in 1948 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Greensboro. They had a long and happy marriage until Gil’s death in 2012. They spent their married life at various residences in Wilmington and Greenville, DE as well as Avalon, NJ and Bonita Springs, FL.

Ellen was devoted to her family while always supporting Gil in his many philanthropic endeavors. She volunteered for various organizations including the Junior Board in Wilmington and Wintethur Museum. Ellen and Gil loved to travel, which included many trips to the Caribbean Islands with family and friends. She and Gil were long-time members of Wilmington Country Club where she enjoyed playing tennis and golf. Ellen was an avid reader and she especially enjoyed painting in her later years. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Wilmington, DE.

In addition to Gil and her parents, Ellen was predeceased by her son John (Steve) Scarborough, as well as her siblings Mary Margaret Spence, Jeannette Durstein Brown, George Stevenson, and Donald Stevenson.

Ellen is survived by her son Gilbert “Pete” Scarborough III (Joyce), daughter Beth DiSabatino (Larry); five grandsons, Gilbert (Brett) Scarborough IV (Laurie), Ryan Scarborough, Michael DiSabatino (Cassie), Jeffrey DiSabatino (Monique), and Kevin DiSabatino (Tina); and nine great-grandchildren, Catherine and Caroline Scarborough, Annabel, Eliza, Sam, Mallory, Jack, Max, and Jay DiSabatino.

Ellen spent her final years at the Country House in Greenville, DE. The family is grateful for the love and care she was given, particularly in the last year.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, December 9, 11 am at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 1314 Foulk Road, Wilmington, DE, where friends may call after 10 am. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Children & Families First (www.cffde.org) or a charity of your choice.
