Holland, S. Evelyn

S. Evelyn Holland, age 83, was born April 14, 1940 in Maplesville, Alabama to Essie Johnson and the late Gentry Mixon. She departed this life on November 22, 2023 in Newark, Delaware.

Evelyn graduated from Delaware State University with degrees in Library Science and Social Work and was a proud member of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority. Evelyn retired from the State of Delaware Division of Social Services where she worked to make a positive impact on families in her community.

Early in her life, she accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church for many years.

Evelyn was united in Holy Matrimony to William Foster Holland, Sr. on June 23, 1962. From this union was born William Foster Holland Jr. and Christopher Douglas Holland. Evelyn and Bill raised their family in the town of Marshallton, Delaware, with the patience, encouragement, and discipline of positive parenting. Evelyn loved her neighborhood and was proud of the community bonds and friendships that she sustained over so many years. She could routinely be heard boasting of the professional accomplishments of her “neighborhood kids” in healthcare, law enforcement, aviation, finance, and business.

Later in life, Evelyn, or MomMom, was active in support of her beloved grandchildren, participating in every event and milestone that she had the opportunity to enjoy. MomMom served as educator, historian, confidant, and cheerleader in every aspect of her grandchildren’s lives.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Holland Sr.; brother, William “Billy” Johnson; and father, Gentry Mixon.

She is survived by her mother, Essie Mixon; two sons, William F. Holland, Jr., and his wife, Kayla D. of Newark, DE; Christopher D. Holland and his partner, Michelle Bowers, of Marshallton DE; grandchildren, William F. Holland III and Sydney Marie Holland; and a host of aunts, nieces, relatives, and friends.
