Roxie Dykes, age 88, of Georgetown, DE passed away peacefully of natural causes, with family by her side, on November 22, 2023 while in Hospice at Christiana Care in Newark. Roxie was born into the family of the late Robert and Ethel Rogers, in February of 1935 in Grafton, WV; she was one of nine sisters and two brothers.
In 1957 she was married to William “Bill” Dykes, after having met him while she was living in Florida. They always liked to tell the story of how they met. First, briefly on a bus. Then later that day, Roxie was at work and telling Kathryn, a friend and co-worker, about the man she met on the bus when Bill walked in. He had stopped by to pick up his mother for lunch, not knowing that Roxie worked there as well. It turned out that Kathryn was Bill’s mother. They married later that year and eventually moved to Wilmington, where they raised four children.
Roxie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved family, especially family get-togethers and reunions. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards, cooking, baking, and working on jigsaw puzzles. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Bill. She is survived by her four children, William of DE, Robert of Myrtle Beach, SC, Judith and Quincy of Wilmington, DE; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sister, Bonnie Fitzgerald of Georgia; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family and friends.
Roxie was a devoted Christian and one of the early members of Kent and Sussex Church of Christ which she attended until the covid crisis. And while she never had covid, she became unable to attend services in person but listened to or watched the services online.
Roxie will be severely missed by all that new her.
A viewing will be held Fri., December 1, from 11– 12 a.m., at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home (3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington DE 19808) followed by a service at 12:01 p.m. Burial will be private.
