Lorena M. Evans, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, November 20, 2023, at the age of 101.
Lorena was born on August 3, 1922, in Wilmington, DE, to the late George W. Russell and Anna L. (Burton) Russell. She was raised in Wilmington and attended Wilmington High School where she played clarinet in the marching band until graduating in 1940. She went on to study at Goldey Beacom College, then during her life held many secretarial positions with the last being Secretary to the Director of the Delaware Memorial Hospital.
Lorena was a dedicated member of the Marshallton United Methodist Church for over 57 years where she developed many lifelong friendships. During this time, she was a member of the United Methodist Women which supports many community causes, was a member of the Marion Rowe Circle, as well as being a member of the choir. Her love of music led her to create a Hand Bell Choir for the church which she directed for many years. Lorena was proud of this accomplishment and the appreciation of the congregation brought her great joy.
As a member of a local travel club, Lorena was able to meet fellow travelers and enjoy many destinations. One of her most memorable was a trip through the Panama Canal. She also enjoyed trips with her family to Cape May, New Jersey, Delaware beaches, and the Outer Banks of North Carolina. One of her favorite memories was a ride on a “pirate adventure” boat where one of her great-grandsons captained the vessel.
Lorena was preceded in death by her husband Raymond W. Evans. She is survived by her four children: Judy Ramsdell of Wilmington, DE, Carol Coleman of Wilmington, DE, James Daisey (Doris) of Millsboro, DE, and Sherri Stewart (Gary) of New Castle, DE; 9 grandchildren, 18 ½ great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Throughout much turmoil and strife, Lorena was always a STRONG supporter and role model for her children. Lorena was a true life force and will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
The family wishes to thank Compassionate Care Hospice for their extraordinary personnel who assisted us as we cared for mom in her final days. The loving care of the nurses, aides, and staff enabled her to spend her last days at home as she requested. They were certainly a blessing to us all.
Services will be private. A memorial service will be held at the Marshallton United Methodist Church at a future date.
