Gregg, Albin A.

Albin A. Gregg, age 95, died peacefully with family at his side on Monday, November 13, 2023, at Cokesbury Village Retirement Community.

Born March 3, 1928, in Kingston, PA, Albin was the youngest and last surviving member of a blended family of six children born to Lithuanian immigrants Anna (Agurkis) and Ignas Grigutis. He graduated from Kingston High School in 1946. To earn money for college, Albin joined the Merchant Marine at age 17 where he worked four summers as a deckhand on the boats bringing iron ore to the steel mills on the Great Lakes. A 1950 graduate of California State Teachers College and a member of Epsilon Pi Tau Honor Society, he earned his master’s degree from Penn State and did additional graduate work at the University of Delaware.

Albin began his teaching career at Wicomico High School in Salisbury, MD. Four years later, he and his wife, Sue, moved to Wilmington, DE, where he taught Math and Industrial Arts at P.S. duPont High School for 15 years. Albin took a position at Mt. Pleasant Junior High School in 1969, and later transferred to Mt. Pleasant High School where he taught Drafting and Industrial Arts until his retirement in 1990. He enjoyed keeping in contact with his former students and colleagues.

A master woodworker, Albin was known to harvest and season wood from local walnut and cherry trees. He built cabinetry and furniture, created turnings on the lathe, made decoy and bird carvings, and constructed three homes, including the residence in which he raised his family. Friends and family members were the recipients of his handmade items, including full-size and miniature grandfather clocks. A collector of antique clocks, he enjoyed restoring clocks and was a member of the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors and its local Delaware chapter. As a younger man, he fished regularly on the north Indian River Inlet jetty using bucktail jigs he poured, painted, and tied.

Albin was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Susan Phillips Gregg, in 1997. He is survived by his wife Florence Helms Gregg, with whom he shared 22 years of marriage. He is also survived by son Michael (Amy); daughters Kathleen Horne (Randall) and Susan L. Gregg (Timothy Shaffer); grandchildren Randi Leigh Reen, Krista Rossetti, Bradford Gregg, Michaela Keffer and Caroline Shaffer Robin; and seven great-grandchildren. He took great pride in his family and all their accomplishments.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at St. Thomas the Apostle, 301 N. Bancroft Parkway, Wilmington, DE with a eulogy at 10:50 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be in St. Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery, Greenville, DE.
