Donald Crompton of Newark, Delaware passed away peacefully on November 2, 2023, after losing his struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Don was born on October 10, 1937 in Wilmington, Delaware. He was preceded in death by his parents John E. Crompton and Helen Haines Crompton, and his brother John Crompton of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.
Don will be sadly missed by his wife of 61 years, Carolyn Shrieves Crompton. He is also survived by his sons Scott M. Crompton of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Jeffrey D. Crompton of Newark, Delaware; his grandson Renny; his sister and their spouses—Sandra and Bill Narcisso of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Joanne and Dick Grove of Peoria, Arizona; sister-in-law Suzanne Crompton of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; his aunt Eileen Haines of Newport, Delaware; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and loved ones.
Don grew up on the west side of Wilmington in the “Flats” neighborhood. It was a place where there were always friends, to hang out with on the corner of 6th Street and Bancroft Parkway, or to enjoy on Italian water ice at Fusco’s on Union Street.
Don graduated from Wilmington High School in 1957 and enjoyed attending many class reunions over the years. He served in the United States Army and later earned a degree in Business Management from Goldey-Beacom College. In 1976 Don became the co-owner of the office supply store of Hugh George Co. until the early 1990’s when he joined Hanby’s Inc. office supplies store. Don discovered his passion for real estate in 1995 when he earned his license and worked for both Remax Suburban residential housing sales, and Paul Robino for new construction sales.
Don retired in 2008 when he and Carolyn decided to move closer to family in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Don and Carolyn eventually returned to Delaware in 2015 to enjoy their beloved only grandson. They enjoyed cruising, an especially memorable one was to Europe with family members.
Interment will be private, and a celebration of Don’s happy life will be planned at a later date. The family would like to thank the entire staff of Cadia Healthcare in Pike Creek for their devoted care of Don during his last 8 months—especially Luis, Jeanine, Rebekah, Valerie, and Martina.
