Velazquez, Christopher Alexander

Christopher, 37, died unexpectedly on Thursday, October 12th in his Philadelphia home. He is survived by his parents, Alexander Velázquez & Judith Velázquez-Alampi and sister, Alexis Baker-Velázquez. He was preceded in death by his partner, Yolanda Abreu.

Christopher was born on January 24, 1986, in Newark, DE and was raised in the city of Wilmington. He attended Middletown High School, where, at the age of 18, Christopher enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and eventually attained the rank of Sergeant. In recognition of his service, Christopher was awarded the Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/”M” Device, NATO Medal- ISAF Afghanistan, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Navy, and Marine Corps Achievement Medal & Combat Action Ribbon.

Christopher’s military association was an integral part of his life even after his honorable discharge in 2012. In recent years, he dedicated a significant amount of time working with Gamers for Peace, an initiative of Veterans for Peace, which carries on the legacy of veterans speaking openly to young people about their military service. Wildly athletic, Christopher showcased his passion for martial arts over the span of twelve years, and even competed on the Pan-American and Junior Olympic Karate teams where he placed as gold and silver medalist.

Christopher will be remembered for his brilliant mind and eccentric sense of humor, his commitment to making a difference and his ability to put others needs before his own.

Christopher’s presence is, and will continue to be, deeply missed. Chris is so much more loved than he could have ever known, and his memory will be cherished by so many of those whose lives he touched.

A police-escorted procession will leave from the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home located at 3710 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington DE 19808 on December 1, 2023 at 9:00 AM. Christopher will be laid to rest at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE at 10:00 AM.
