Mary Joan Thompson, age 89, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully with loved ones by her side on November 4, 2023.

She was born and raised in Wilmington, DE and was the daughter of the late Mary (Carman) and Francis Fisher. Mary Joan attended Christ of King School and graduated from P.S. Dupont High School Class of 1952 where she was the head of her class in Math and a member of the Service Club.

She started her working career at the Dupont Experimental Station where she met the love of her life, John F. Thompson. They raised their family in Wilmington. Mary Joan then went back to work where she enjoyed working as an office manager and administrator for Dr. Ira Lobis and Dr. James Fierro’s medical practice.

She was a member of St. Joseph Church, Wilmington. Mary Joan’s family was the center of her heart, and she cherished her time with them, especially at the annual vacation to the beach. Along with her many other talents Mary Joan was a fantastic cook, loved to entertain, was a seamstress and made some of her own clothes. She also enjoyed bridge and card games with friends and family.

Mary Joan is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years John F. Thompson; son, John J. Thompson and wife Elizabeth Thompson and grandchildren children, Zach, Matt and Heather Thompson all in Georgia; daughters in law, Kathleen Thompson, and Laura Ames, and grandchildren Nicholas Thompson and Connor Thompson; a sister, Geraldine Reybold and her daughters, Rodnie with daughter, Mollie; Robin with daughters, Abbie and Alison and Mimi with sons, Peter and Paul and a nephew Jay C. Fisher. She is also preceded in death by her son Scott G. Thompson, a brother Jay Fisher and a great nephew, Christopher Gore.

A visitation will begin at 10 am on November 11, with a memorial service to follow at 11 am at McCrery & Harra Funeral Homes, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington. Burial will be held privately.
