Spinden, Laura Ann (Miller)

Laura Ann (Miller) Spinden, Age 66, of Wilmington passed away on October 15, 2023, at home surrounded by her family.

Laura was born on March 29, 1957, in Geneva, Switzerland to the late Kenneth and Theresa Miller, during her father’s overseas assignment with the Dupont Company. As a child she lived in Milwaukee, WI, and Cleveland, OH attending Lakewood High school, before her family moved to Wilmington, DE. She graduated from Concord High School in 1975 and the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979.

Laura joined the US Navy in July 1984 and graduated with honors at the Naval Hospital Corps School in Jan. 1985. She completed Medical Laboratory School in Aug. 1985 at Fort Sam Houston, TX. She was assigned to the Hospital Clinical Laboratory of the Naval Hospital Philadelphia, Pa. She contributed greatly to the care and welfare of patients and was a recipient of the Navy Achievement Medal.

Laura was employed by Montell/LyondellBasell as a Research Laboratory Technician in 1988 where she worked for 13 years. In 2001 she was employed with Dupont as a Senior Laboratory Technician for 12 years. She most recently worked at Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics for 7 years before her retirement. Laura was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, daughter-in law, and friend. She loved gardening, bike riding, camping, and being with family. During her high school years, she was a prolific artist, creating many paintings, drawings, and a few sculptures. She was an avid musician. She played the clarinet, and loved singing, especially with the Dupont Diversity Choir. In the late 1980s she was a member of the National Guard Band and made great memories with her friends.

Laura was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Spinden III, her in-laws Marie and William Spinden. She is survived by her son Alex Spinden, her sisters Sara Miller and Elise Miller (John Gray), and many nieces and nephews.

Family and Friends may call on Monday, October 23, 2023, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 2431 Frazer Road, Newark, DE 19713 where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will be held on November 15th at 10:00 a.m. at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2645 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701.
