Clapp, Nancy Herndon

The family of Nancy Herndon Clapp, age 90, wishes to give her a tearful “fare well” and commit her into the Almighty’s keeping.

Nancy was the beloved daughter of the Right Reverend Henry Herndon and his wife, Amelia, and the faithful wife of her late husband, Leonard. We, her children, Chris (Margie) Clapp, Barbara (Bob) Zerbe, Jennifer (Steve) Moglowsky, loved her for many years. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Nancy is also preceded in death by her two siblings, Henry “Hank” Herndon and Mary Ravdin.

Nancy graduated from the Tatnall School back in the days when Mrs. Tatnall was the headmistress, and the University of Delaware when Mrs. DuPont mentored the women. She received her BA in Human Resources and Early Child Development.

Years later, Nancy began and operated the Heritage Preschool, and taught early childhood at The Tatnall School.

Always a faithful Episcopalian, Nancy was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church, where her father was a rector for many years, and later, of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. She has many dear friends from her churches, choir, bridge group, and Stephen’s Ministry. In the summers she spent wonderful vacations in Grand Isle, VT, where her father had served as a founding rector at the Lady Chapel and the family had a camp with their cousins. She was a member of the AAUW as a graduate of UD.

Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will miss her attentive advice and hospitality. She loved all the birthdays, holidays, game nights, bridge dates, dinners, and Zoom Bible studies… she always loved to celebrate and her home was always open.

Her memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 28th, at 11 A.M., at St. Barnabas Church on 2800 Duncan Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808 where the inurnment will follow in the church’s Memorial Garden. Further remembrances and lunch will then continue in the church hall.

Contributions may be made to St. Barnabas Church in her memory.
