Birino D’Ambrosio of Wilmington, DE, passed away on September 19, 2023 at age 92. One of three sons of Antonio and Lena D’Ambrosio. Birino was born and raised in W. Bridgewater, MA. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He graduated from Worchester Polytechnic Institute with BS (1958), Masters (1960) and PHD (1966) in Chemical Engineering.
He began his engineering career with Kimberly Clark, and spent the remainder of his career with DuPont as a chemical engineer, retiring in 1992. Birino was a devoted and loyal husband, son, brother, and proud father and grandfather. Birino met the love of his life, Patricia, on a blind date friends arranged. They married soon after in 1962.
Birino enjoyed reading and spending time at the local library. He also loved, sewing, gardening and bird watching. He was an enthusiastic woodworker who could often be found with a project in suit or helping his children on home projects. He deeply enjoyed cooking; a passion he gained from his mother. She founded a family tradition that Birino adopted of winter Sundays making homemade pizza and cookies for the family. The cooking highlight of the year for Birino’s family and friends was his mother’s lasagna recipe, which he made during holidays. He spent many memorable summers at the Delaware beach enjoying time together on the boardwalk and beach with family and friends. He was often found walking his routine 2-mile trek many mornings whether at the beach or in Wilmington. Only rain or snow would delay the journey.
His wife, Patricia, passed in 2007, and he is survived by their two children: Kimberly Heffelfinger and Anthony D’Ambrosio (Eve Tahmincioglu); and three grandchildren: Cheiron D’Ambrosio, Circe D’Ambrosio and Kylee Heffelfinger; brother Billino D’Ambrosio, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Birino was predeceased by his parents, Antonio and Lena D’Ambrosio; brother, Bernardo D’Ambrosio; nephew Rickard D’Ambrosio.
A Committal Service will be held Friday, Oct 6 at 10 am at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd. Bear, DE 19701.
