Doris M. Hedrick, age 87, of Elsmere, DE passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 30, 2023. She was born and raised in Marshallton, DE and was the daughter of the late Rebecca Cummings and Benjamin Carter.
Doris attended A.I. High school and took certification courses for many years. Doris worked for the Red Clay Consolidated School District for 40 years and retired in 2005 as a manager of the cafeteria for several of the schools.
She was a life-time member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Mill Creek Fire Company, 2 & 21. Doris would have been a member for 60 years on December 2, 2023 where she was the financial treasurer and coordinated the kitchen and many of the functions at the fire house hall. Seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren brought the most joy to her heart; especially where she could spoil them. During the holidays brought her even more joy with the little ones, specifically at Christmas time. Doris also enjoyed sitting on the stoop and talking to the neighbors. Her favorite summer activity was to go to the beach with her daughters and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Charles A. Hedrick, Jr., 69 years in October; daughters, Karen Gilbert, Linda Beaver and her husband Ronald and Michelle August; six grandchildren, Rhonda, Heather, Erin (Jeremy), Mark (Daria), Sabrina (Dan) and Barbara (Willis) and eight great-grandchildren, Jordan, Shayna, Grant, Braylon, Logan, Jackson, Benjamin and Bentley. Doris was also preceded in death by her three siblings, Francis Carter, Mickey Barton and Dorothy Parker.
A viewing will be held on Friday, September 8, from 10-11 am at the McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy, Wilmington, DE where a funeral service will follow at 11 am. A private burial will then follow.
