Walters, Rick

Richard D Walters (Rick) of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully after a brief and rare illness on July 30, 2023, with his beloved wife Cheryl by his side. He was 66 years old.

Rick was born on September 3, 1956, to Dene and Virginia Walters in Wilmington, Delaware. After Rick graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1975, he went on to earn a degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Rick’s professional journey led him to a fulfilling career Delaware Transit Corporation, where he dedicated 25 years of service before his well-deserved retirement in 2021.

Rick was known for his kind and caring nature, paired with a quirky sense of humor that brightened the lives of those around him. He was the go-to person whenever something needed fixing, often saying, “If I can’t fix it, it’s not broke.” Among his interests, Rick had a passion for NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and trap shooting. He also loved traveling with his wife Cheryl and spending time with his family and friends by the pool. Above all else, Rick had an enormous heart and generously shared his love with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Rick - who recently celebrated his 15th wedding anniversary - will be sadly missed by his wife Cheryl, as well as his siblings Tom Walters (Patti), Matt Walters (Carol), and Jan Blaylock (Dick); and his stepmother Marsha Walters. He will also be missed by his stepsons Tom Waski (Sarah), Michael Waski (Sarah), and Mark Waski (Jillian). His grandchildren Jack, Mitchell, Amelia, and Savannah will greatly miss playing with their Grandpop. Many others will miss Rick, including his nieces and nephews, his dearest friends, and his dog, Basil.

The family would like to thank the staff at Thomas Jefferson Hospital and Accent Hospice Care for their kindness and support.

Visitation will be held at 11am on Monday, August 7, at McCrery & Harra Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike in Wilmington, followed by a memorial service at 12pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory can be made to the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) Foundation (http://cjdfoundation.org).
